- Comedian Eric Omondi has been freed on a Ksh100,000 bond following his
dramatic arrest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Friday, June 5th.
The entertainer was charged with obstructing motorists under
Section 53.1c of the Kenya Roads Act after allegedly offloading 120 empty
jerricans along Nairobi’s Kimathi Street on May 18th, 2026 to
protest fuel prices.
According to prosecutors, Omondi disrupted traffic by
unloading the containers from an Isuzu lorry, registration KAR 508Y.
However, his legal team, led by Embakasi East MP, Babu
Owino, dismissed the charges as unfounded.
“The charges against Eric Omondi are frivolous, fickle,
limping and vexatious,” Owino declared.
The defense further questioned why police confiscated
Omondi’s phones during the arrest, arguing that the move was unrelated to the
alleged traffic obstruction.
“What is baffling is that they seized his phones. We are
wondering whether he placed his funds on the road to obstruct vehicles,”
Owino quipped.
The comedian spent the weekend in custody at Lang’ata Police
Station after police denied him bail.
His lawyers described the saga as reminiscent of “Kamata
Kamata Fridays,” accusing authorities of targeting him unfairly.
