Tuesday, June 2, 2026 - Police in Kwale County rescued a 22-year-old man who had spent five months chained at the compound of a well-known traditional healer identified as “Mganga Baakanda” in Mwamanga village.
According to reports, the young man was taken to the healer
in January after reportedly developing mental health challenges.
His father claimed that he entrusted his son to the
traditional healer and the boy’s mother for treatment and was instructed to pay
Ksh 18,000.
When police officers raided the compound, they found the
22-year-old locked in heavy chains secured with a padlock to iron bars fixed
into the floor.
He was sitting on a cold, waterlogged concrete surface and
appeared weak after months of confinement under harsh conditions.
Authorities described the scene as disturbing, raising
concerns over the treatment the young man was subjected to during the
captivity.
Police have since detained the traditional healer and the
victim’s mother as investigations continue.
The rescued man was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention and further care.
