Former Catholic Priest lands in trouble for plotting to overthrow RUTO’s Government - Smoked out of his hideout in Kiambu (PHOTO)

Tuesday, January 2, 2026 - Detectives from the DCI Headquarters’ Operation Action Team (OAT) have arrested 44-year-old Edwin Gathangi Waiguru over cybercrime offences linked to content said to advocate the unlawful overthrow of the Government.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect was arrested following a coordinated operation at his hideout in the Kirigiti area of Kiambu County.

Investigators say the arrest followed scrutiny of a post shared on his Facebook page, “Kinta Kinte II,” which reportedly outlined plans for sustained street demonstrations throughout June 2026, targeted arson attacks on selected public and private properties, tax boycotts and the formation of a parallel transitional administration.

In a notable twist, Waiguru is said to be a former ordained Roman Catholic priest who later joined the Catholic Charismatic Church, a splinter group that allows clergy to marry.

Despite leaving the Catholic Church, he reportedly continued wearing clerical robes and had recently been linked to church activities in the Riruta area.

The DCI stated that investigators believe the publication crossed from protected political expression into incitement aimed at destabilizing constitutional governance.

The content is undergoing forensic and evidential analysis as investigations continue.

Following his arrest, Waiguru was taken to DCI Headquarters and later transferred to the Serious Crime Unit for further processing.

He is expected to face charges under Section 40(1)(a)(iii) of the Penal Code, which criminalizes attempts to unlawfully overthrow a legitimate government.

The DCI reiterated that while freedom of expression is constitutionally protected, it must be exercised responsibly and within the law.

The agency further warned that action will be taken against anyone found publishing or distributing inflammatory content that promotes violence or national division.
