The new State House Nairobi is plain Mediocre - Renowned Kenyan Architect declares despite RUTO spending over Ksh 800 million on makeover (PHOTOs)

Wednesday, May 13, 2026 - Renowned Kenyan architect, Professor Alfred Omenya, has sparked heated debate online after sharing his candid opinion on the newly renovated State House Nairobi.

Posting side-by-side photos of the old and new-look State House on X, Prof. Omenya did not hold back in his criticism.

“I am a Professor of Architecture. I have been a judge for Commonwealth Association of Architects Awards, International Union of Architects Awards, Asia Architecture Awards, AAK-Crown Architecture Awards, etc.”

“Feel free to ignore my opinion. The new State House is plain MEDIOCRE!” he wrote.

His remarks have fueled mixed reactions among Kenyans, with some praising the modern facelift while others argue that the former design had a more iconic and timeless appeal.

According to 2025 budget documents, President William Ruto allocated between Ksh 800 million and Ksh 895 million for renovations at State House Nairobi.

The funds are said to be part of a broader Ksh 2.3 billion facelift plan targeting State House and other presidential lodges across the country.
