Thursday, April 23, 2026 - Tension is brewing within the United Opposition after People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader, Martha Karua, openly dismissed Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) boss, Rigathi Gachagua’s self‑styled role as Mt. Kenya kingpin.
Gachagua has increasingly projected himself as the region’s de
facto leader, but Karua cautioned that being vocal does not automatically
translate into kingpin status.
She insisted that Gachagua is merely a political leader like
herself and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, adding that he is her junior both
politically and by age.
Karua further argued that Mt. Kenya voters had already
abandoned President Ruto’s administration while Gachagua was still serving as
Deputy President.
“He found us here. Being louder than us doesn’t make him the
kingpin; he is just a party leader like me or Uhuru, nothing special,”
she remarked.
Her sharp rebuke hints at emerging cracks within the United
Opposition, which also brings together Wiper leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, and
Jubilee’s Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
Gachagua’s push to position DCP as the default Mt. Kenya
party, coupled with his calls for zoning in by‑elections, appears to have
unsettled other opposition outfits.
Analysts warn that such friction could trigger an implosion
of the coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, an outcome that will play
directly into President Ruto’s hands.
