Tuesday, January 06, 2025 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has ignited a heated debate after demanding that students from his Kikuyu community be given priority for Grade 10 placement in top national schools within the Central Region.
The area hosts prestigious institutions such as Alliance
Boys, Alliance Girls and Mang’u High School.
Speaking at a public event, Gachagua lamented that some Mt.
Kenya students with strong grades were being placed in lower‑ranking schools,
while learners from other regions secured slots in the coveted institutions.
“Sasa hapa kwetu shule zetu… Alliance, Mangu… Watoto wetu
wamepelekwa shule iko chini na marks yao iko juu… watu wengine wameletwa kwa
mashule zetu hapa,” he said.
His remarks quickly drew backlash online, with critics
accusing him of portraying national schools as Kikuyu property rather than
institutions open to all Kenyans.
The controversy adds to Gachagua’s record of divisive
statements, with opponents branding him tribalistic even as he positions
himself for a 2027 presidential bid.
