Wednesday, April 9, 2025 - Former Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC) chairperson, Irungu Nyakera, has revealed why he refused to join President William Ruto on his recent Mt Kenya tour.
Speaking on Spice FM on Wednesday, April 9th,
Nyakera explained that he did not want to either hear or speak lies to the
people.
“I did not want to attend the Mt Kenya tour because I felt
that if I did, on one hand, I would be hearing lies and failed promises.”
“On the other hand, if I was asked to speak, I would not
have been able to tell a lie.”
“We made very clear promises, and I would have had to face
the people,” Nyakera said.
The former PS stated that the public's anger stems from the
unkept promises made during the 2022 election campaign.
He recalled being part of the Kenya Kwanza coalition and
defending its agenda, but now, two years into President Ruto’s term, the
promises remain unfulfilled.
“In 2022, we went across the country with Kenya Kwanza
leaders making promises.”
“Now, two years later, those same promises are being
repeated,” he said.
Nyakera dismissed the narrative that the Government lacks
funds, arguing instead that money is being wasted on unnecessary projects and
events.
“This is not the first time money has been wasted on such
events.”
“We had a project that could have been opened by Nyumba Kumi
elders, but it was opened by nine helicopters.”
“It's wasteful, and that’s where the anger of the people
lies,” Nyakera opined.
Ruto has since revoked
Nyakera’s appointment as the Chairperson of the Kenyatta International
Convention Centre (KICC) and appointed Samuel Waweru Mwangi to lead the
historic convention facility for the next three years.
