Wednesday, April 9, 2025 - Vocal Homa Bay Town MP, Peter Kaluma, has come to President William Ruto’s defense following online criticism over his recent launch of a transformer in Bungoma County.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, April 9th,
Kaluma emphasized the importance of such initiatives, especially in rural areas
that still lack electricity access.
“Honourable Speaker, some people joked about how a whole
president is launching a transformer.”
“The fact of the matter is that in some areas, seeing a
transformer is huge. It makes lighting those rural communities very easy,”
Kaluma said.
He pointed out that in many parts of his own constituency,
access to electricity is still a dream.
“For some people, if they were to just get a transformer, it
would be a cause for celebration, as they are well below the rate of
connectivity,”
“Any measure, Mr Speaker, that allows the country to improve
on power distribution has a domino effect of lighting up the country.” he
added.
His remarks come in response to criticism from opposition
leaders and social media users who claimed Ruto’s appearance at such a basic
event was beneath the stature of a Head of State.
Kaluma praised the Last Mile connectivity project,
especially its role in supporting sectors like the digital economy.
“Parts of our economy which depend on electrical power
cannot run without a reliable power supply,” he noted.
