Heartbreaking video of women wailing in Kiambu as a young man fights for his life after consuming illicit liquor - Pombe Itamaliza Vijana Mount Kenya (WATCH)

Tuesday, September 22, 2026 - Locals took to the streets in Kiambu to protest over illicit liquor, which they say has led to the deaths of young people and broken families.

During the protests, a young man was captured on camera lying on the tarmac and fighting for his life after consuming suspected poisonous liquor at a nearby drinking den.

Women were seen wailing as they watched the man writhe in pain before he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The protests followed the deaths of three people after they consumed suspected dangerous alcoholic drinks in Kimende town, Lari Sub-County.

One of them died on Sunday, while the other two died on Monday morning, prompting residents to start demonstrations.

The protests later turned chaotic, with residents breaking into pubs selling wines and spirits and destroying alcoholic drinks they found.

Businesses were forced to close as protests and destruction continued.

Efforts by Lari Deputy County Commissioner Samuel Kariuki and the Sub-County Police Commander to stop the protesters were futile, forcing police to lob tear gas to disperse them.
