2026 - U.S. officials have moved to clarify speculation surrounding an
aircraft spotted landing at Laikipia Air Base.
In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Kenya dismissed claims
that Americans exposed to Ebola had already arrived in the country.
Officials explained that the aircraft was transporting
equipment and healthcare personnel tasked with preparing a proposed quarantine
facility.
They further noted that the flight had departed before a
court order halting the project was issued.
Construction of the facility, which was expected to take
less than a month, has since stopped in compliance with the ruling.
Embassy officials emphasized that the proposed center was
designed to meet strict public health standards and minimize contamination
risks if activated.
Defending the choice of Laikipia Air Base, they said the
site was selected for its isolated location, away from densely populated areas.
The clarification comes a day after President William Ruto
confirmed his approval of the facility.
Speaking on June 1st, Ruto said the decision
followed a request from the U.S government and was informed by Kenya’s
longstanding partnership with Washington.
“Our partnership with the American Government is mutually
beneficial.”
“When President Trump asked Kenya to support them by having
a center in Laikipia Air Base, I gave the okay because it was an agreement with
friends who have walked with Kenya for 30-40 years,” he stated.
