Thursday, May 28, 2026 - A parent at Utumishi Girls Academy disrupted an emotional assembly on Thursday, May 29th, 2026, as Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat addressed students, teachers and families following the dormitory fire that claimed 16 lives.

The blaze, which broke out at around 2 a.m on May 28, left parents and the nation in shock.

Scores of students were injured, with seven still hospitalised.

Anxiety and grief filled the school compound as families awaited word on their children’s safety.

One father, seemingly overwhelmed after waiting hours without clarity, broke down during the assembly.

He screamed and wailed, demanding to see his daughter.

“No way, no, no, no, I want to see my daughter.”

“No, show me my daughter. What are you telling us?” he cried, before collapsing to the ground as relatives and police officers tried to restrain him.

“Baba Sheryl, please don’t hurt yourself, just let him be please,” a voice pleaded in the background.

He insisted on being allowed to check the bodies of the victims.

“We have been here since morning, it will only take five minutes to know.”

“You are not telling us anything. Please give me a break, let me know if my daughter is among the dead or which hospital she was taken to. Stop lecturing me, I do not want stories,” he said.

Following the heartbreaking incident, the school was closed to allow investigations.
