ODM leader, Senator OBURU OGINGA, declares the seat he will contest for in 2027 General Elections - He will be 84 years old

Monday, May 25, 2026 - ODM leader and veteran politician, Dr. Oburu Oginga, has confirmed that he will defend his Siaya County Senate seat in the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking on Monday, May 25th, Oburu declared: “I will be defending my position as the Senator of Siaya County in 2027.”

Oburu was elected Senator in 2022, succeeding James Orengo, who vacated the seat to run for Governor.

His win marked a return to national politics after serving at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

His career spans decades, beginning in the 1970s as a Kisumu Municipality councillor before working as an Economist in the Ministry of Planning.

Between 1994 and 2013, he represented Bondo Constituency in Parliament, later serving as Assistant Minister for Finance in the Grand Coalition Government under President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

He was later nominated to the National Assembly by ODM before moving to EALA in 2017.

His announcement comes amid factional battles within ODM.

A recent TIFA Research poll released on May 14th showed his Linda Ground faction trailing Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi wing, with only 24 percent support compared to 73 percent for Sifuna’s camp.
