2026 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claims that President
William Ruto irregularly acquired land in the Maasai Mara to set up a high-end
luxury camp.
Speaking during a church service, Gachagua claimed that the
President “grabbed” part of the reserve and developed a Ritz-Carlton-branded
facility in the area.
The luxury safari camp in question, a 20-suite facility located along the Sand River, opened in late 2025 and quickly drew attention due to its exclusivity, with rooms reportedly going for about $3,500 per night.
The multi-billion project had previously sparked legal
concerns from the Maasai Education, Research and Conservation Institute (MERC),
which filed a case arguing that the development could interfere with a key
wildlife migration corridor between the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti.
The group also questioned whether a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) had been made public.
However, the case was later dismissed in court.
