2026 - Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has dismissed claims that former President
Uhuru Kenyatta is financing the Linda Mwananchi rallies.
The embattled ODM Secretary General, who has been leading a
faction of party rebels in rallies across the country against President William
Ruto’s regime, said their activities are cost-effective and manageable without
external sponsorship.
“Our rallies do not cost above Ksh 500,000. For example,
when I want to go to Kitengela, what do I need? When we went to Kitengela, we
held our rally on the road.”
“The logistics I need there are the vehicle that has carried
me and the sound system,” Sifuna explained.
He revealed that friends and supporters step in to provide
logistical support.
“We are also supported by well-wishers and friends. Our podiums,
for instance, are given by people who were close to the late Raila Odinga.”
“They therefore don’t charge us commercial rates. Personally, I
give Ksh 50,000, and with all those numbers, we raise enough funds,”
he said.
Sifuna added that equipment is often donated.
“The truck we did a roadshow in Kakamega was given to us free of
charge.”
“When you put out a call to the people, you will be surprised.
People have these assets just sitting somewhere, ready to give,” he
noted.
Accusing rivals of blackmail, Sifuna maintained that their
agenda resonates with Kenyans.
“These are our friends, not Uhuru. Kenyans are resonating with our
call, and therefore, support is guaranteed.”
“Many are overwhelming us with support. People are scared out here
that politics is expensive.”
“It all depends on the goodwill you have for the wellness of the
people,” he said.
