Thursday, March 19, 2026 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that his life and that of his family are under threat.
Speaking in an interview, Gachagua said he has faced at
least 24 attacks, including incidents in churches, but lamented that police
have failed to act despite reports being filed.
“To be very honest, I am very fearful for my life and the
lives of my family members, because since I was impeached, they have declared
war on me,” he stated.
Gachagua claimed that the attacks are meant to intimidate
him into silencing his criticism of President William Ruto’s Government.
He vowed not to retreat, insisting that stepping back would
hand victory to his detractors.
The DCP leader dismissed fears that Kenya could mirror
Uganda or Tanzania, where opposition leaders are jailed without due process.
“Kenya is a democracy full of freedom fighters. Kenyans have
a track record of rejecting forced rule or intimidation,” he said.
Drawing parallels with colonial oppression, Gachagua accused
the regime of imposing heavy taxes and suppressing dissent.
He admitted regret for backing Ruto in the 2022 elections
but promised to make amends.
Gachagua’s United Opposition movement, alongside Linda
Mwananchi, has reported disruptions at rallies, accusing the Government of
hiring goons.
However, Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja, maintains
that law enforcement has no time for hired thugs.
