Monday, February 23, 2026 - Veteran Siaya Senator and ODM leader, Dr. Oburu Oginga, has surprised Kenyans after jumping straight into the viral “Weka Mawe” craze.
In a video that has taken social media by storm, Dr. Oburu
is seen enthusiastically mimicking internet boxing sensation Mbavu
Destroyer, the man behind the now‑iconic catchphrase.
The slang, originally coined in Mbavu’s dramatic training
clips, has become a national chant as he prepares for his much‑anticipated
showdown with rival Majembe.
In the short clip, Dr. Oginga appears in high spirits,
throwing playful jabs in the air while repeatedly shouting “Weka
Mawe!” alongside a lady hyping him up as they chant, “Hii ni
mbaya, weka mawe, mbwekse!”
She then slips in a reminder for young people to register as
voters, blending civic duty with viral humour.
The upcoming April 4th, 2026 boxing match,
promoted by media personality Oga Obinna, has evolved into a
national spectacle.
Even President William Ruto has acknowledged the hype,
pledging financial support and 2,000 tickets for fans.
Mbavu Destroyer’s over‑the‑top training videos - where he
lifts heavy objects or gets hit with stones to prove his toughness - have only
fueled the frenzy.
Oburu’s video>>> has sparked mixed reactions with a section of
Kenyans lauding him for tapping into the digital culture to stay relatable to
Kenya’s younger, meme‑driven audience, while others feel it is a show of
desperation as the party faces a rebellion from youthful members led by Senator
Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino.
