Wednesday, January 14, 2026 - A man has shared his exchange with a friend who was inviting him join a group organizing his upcoming engagement and dowry ceremony.

“Niko na function engagement party/dowry payment in April… if you willing naeza kukuweka,” he wrote.

But the response was blunt.

“Izi dowry I thought watu hujilipia ata mimi nililipa tu yangu ama,” the friend replied, questioning the idea of contributing.

The sender clarified, “Understand sichangiwi mahari,” explaining it was just for the party.

Still, the friend insisted that this is not an emergency, stating that he never bothered people when paying dowry for his wife and urged the friend to just get married at the Attorney General’s office and life goes on.

He added, “Ata hiyo ni the man marrying that does it. Watu wanaenda kwa Attorney General na wanaishi”

This has become a common trend where a couple plans an extravagant ruracio/ wedding and expect friends and family to foot majority of the bills.
