Tuesday, December 09, 2025 - There was a brief scare in Ngulia, Taita Taveta County, after a black rhino briefly charged towards President William Ruto during the launch of the Tsavo West Rhino Sanctuary on Tuesday, December 9th.
The President, accompanied by senior Government officials - including
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Erustus Kanga and National
Security Advisor Monica Juma - had travelled to witness the symbolic release of
a rhino back into the wild, a key milestone in Kenya’s conservation efforts.
The entourage arrived in a tourist van before stepping onto
the back of a truck positioned a short distance from the transport container
holding the rhino.
As KWS rangers moved in to open the container, the huge
animal stepped out calmly, only to suddenly turn towards the President’s
direction and make a brief, unexpected charge.
The moment triggered startled gasps and instinctive steps
backward from those on the truck, but the rhino quickly diverted and dashed off
in the opposite direction.
What followed was laughter, relief, and playful teasing.
“It wants chaos?” President Ruto joked, sending the crowd
into fits of laughter.
One official couldn’t resist teasing him further: “Mr.
President, were you a little concerned? I saw you back up - you were moving!”
