Wednesday, December 31, 2025 - Traffic came to a standstill along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in Gitaru after boda boda riders set a 14-seater matatu ablaze following a deadly accident.
The matatu, reportedly operated by NNK SACCO, knocked down
and killed a 22-year-old boda boda rider who was delivering a carpet.
According to witnesses, the vehicle was making a turn at an
unsafe spot when it collided with the rider, sparking outrage among fellow
operators.
In retaliation, the boda boda riders blocked the busy
highway before setting the matatu on fire, causing major traffic delays.
A video from the scene showed the vehicle fully engulfed in
flames, with thick smoke billowing into the air as crowds gathered.
No police officers or firefighters were immediately on site.
