Thursday, December 04, 2025 - National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director-General Noordin Haji are among 54 lawyers recommended for conferment of the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel.

The list, released on Thursday, December 4th, by Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Committee on Senior Counsel Chairperson, Philip Murgor, features prominent names in the legal fraternity.

Those recommended include Rapinder Singh Sehmi, Paul Ndiritu Ndungu, Clement Muturi Kigano, Eliud Ng’ang’a Njoroge, Evans Thiga Gaturu, Ambrose Rachier Otieno, Richard Omwela, Alexandra Kontos, and Nancy Wakarima Karigithu.

The Senior Counsel (SC) designation is the highest professional recognition for advocates in Kenya, comparable to the Queen’s Counsel (QC) in the United Kingdom.

It is awarded to lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional service, integrity, and contributed to the development of the legal system.

Eligibility requires at least 15 years of practice at the Bar, a record of professional excellence, ethical conduct, and substantive experience before superior courts.

Advocates found guilty of misconduct are automatically disqualified.

Applications are vetted by the Committee on Senior Counsel, comprising senior members of the judiciary, LSK representatives, and legal experts.

Recommendations are forwarded to the Chief Justice, who submits the final list to the President for conferment.

Those conferred enjoy privileges such as precedence in court proceedings, distinctive attire symbolizing seniority, and entry into the official Roll of Senior Counsel.

The tradition, often referred to as “taking silk,” underscores the honor and responsibility attached to the rank.
