04, 2025 - The death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga generated the
highest online interest in Kenya, topping the list of the most-searched losses,
according to Google’s 2025 search statistics.
Raila, who led the ODM Party for decades, passed away on
October 15th, 2025, at the age of 80 after suffering a cardiac
arrest in Kerala, India.
He collapsed during a morning walk near the Sreedhareeyam
Ayurvedic Eye Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for diabetes,
hypertension and chronic kidney disease.
Second on the list was Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, who
died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, on July 3rd, 2025.
The accident claimed both his life and that of his younger
brother, André Silva.
American activist Charlie Kirk ranked third after being
fatally shot during a speaking event in Utah on September 10th,
2025.
Pope Francis followed at fourth, with his death on April 21st
at the age of 88 drawing global attention.
Former IEBC chair, Wafula Chebukati, came fifth after
succumbing to cardiac arrest in Nairobi, while Kenyan teacher and blogger, Albert
Ojwang, ranked sixth following his controversial death in police custody.
Seventh was former journalist Kimani Mbugua, who died by
suicide in Mombasa, leaving behind a heartbreaking note.
Wrestling legend, Hulk Hogan, placed eighth, Kenyan literary
icon, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, ninth, and Nairobi lawyer, Kyalo Mbobu, tenth after a
fatal drive-by shooting.
The list reflects how controversies, and tragedies shaped
Kenya’s digital conversations in 2025, with Raila’s passing standing out as the
year’s most defining moment online.
