Kind Magistrate spares college student criminal conviction for shoplifting Ksh 1,800 bottle of whiskey from Naivas Supermarket (VIDEO)

Friday, November 21, 2025 - In a rare display of empathy, Thika Chief Magistrate Hon. Stella Atambo turned a courtroom moment into a life lesson for a 23-year-old college student accused of stealing whisky worth Ksh 1,800 from a Naivas Supermarket.

Rather than allowing the young man to take a plea and risk a criminal record, the magistrate chose compassion over punishment.

“You’re only 23. If you’re charged, this will mean you’ll carry a criminal record. You have a long way to go in life, and such an offense shouldn’t taint your integrity.”

“I cannot convict you over Ksh 1,800 bottle of whiskey,” she remarked.

Instead of conviction, the good magistrate directed the student to compensate the supermarket for the stolen item.

She went further, urging lawyers present in the courtroom to help raise the amount, framing the act not just as restitution but as mentorship.

In a lighthearted moment, she even asked the male lawyers if they knew the whisky brand and its shelf price, sparking laughter amid the seriousness.
