22, 2025 - ODM Secretary-General and Nairobi Senator, Edwin Sifuna, has
condemned Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for his controversial remarks about the
late Raila Odinga, stating that Raila would have responded with compassion, not
hate.
In a post shared on his official X account on Wednesday,
October 22nd, 2025, Sifuna described Kahiga as “easily the vilest of
the bunch,” referring to comments made during a burial ceremony in Nyeri that
many interpreted as mocking Raila’s death.
“If he were still around, the next thing you would see is
him having lunch with Kahiga.” Sifuna reminded Kenyans of Raila’s forgiving
nature.
He urged the public to uphold Raila’s legacy of unity and
love, even in the face of provocation.
Governor Kahiga had suggested that Raila’s death was “God’s
intervention” implying that the Mt Kenya region had been politically sidelined
due to Raila’s ties with President William Ruto.
The remarks have sparked widespread outrage.
Council of Governors Chair, Ahmed Abdullahi, called them
reckless, ODM Chair Gladys Wanga labelled them primitive and UDA Chair Cecily
Mbarire described them as disrespectful.
Meanwhile, Kahiga has resigned from his position as Vice-Chair
of the Council of Governors (CoG) and issued a public apology.
“From the very onset, I want to sincerely apologise to our mourning
nation, to the family of the Right Honourable former Prime Minister Raila Molo
Odinga… for any harm that it has elicited,” Kahiga said.
He added: “I am taking responsibility for the real and perceived meaning
of my remarks, and as a result, I have decided that with immediate effect, I am
going to step down as the Vice Chair of the Council of Governors.”
