Thursday, October 23, 2025 - Raila Odinga Junior was officially installed as the head of the Raila Odinga family in a traditional ceremony held on Thursday, October 23rd, at the family’s home in Bondo, Siaya County.
The event marked a symbolic transfer of leadership following
the death of his father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away on
October 15th in India.
Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga led the ceremony, clarifying that
the installation was cultural, not political.
“He is now the leader of this home, together with the
mother. The mother will be there to give him all the advice he needs,” Oburu
said.
Raila Junior was shaved by one of his grandmothers, dressed
in traditional attire, and handed a Luo shield and spear to signify his new
role.
The installation comes amid claims by Kakamega Senator Boni
Khalwale that Raila had intended for his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, carry on
his political legacy - not Raila Junior or Winnie Odinga.
Khalwale said Raila began grooming Rosemary after the death
of his eldest son, Fidel, even encouraging her to run for the Kibra
parliamentary seat.
“Like I can comfortably, without fear of contradiction,
confirm to Kenyans that Baba’s choice amongst his children for who would
succeed him was not Raila Junior, was not Winnie.”
“After Fidel died, Raila told Rosemary to prepare to become
the MP of Kibra,” Khalwale said in an interview with a local media house.
The event was attended by family members, community elders, and political allies.
