2025 - Tension gripped Nduma village in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, after a
local farmer unearthed a live mortar bomb while ploughing his land.
The discovery of the 80 mm artillery shell, commonly
referred to as an “80 mic mic”, sparked panic among residents, prompting an
immediate police response.
Kikuyu Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Ndege confirmed
the incident, stating that officers from the Bomb Disposal Unit had been
deployed to secure the area.
“The bomb is likely to cause damage, with an explosive
threshold of over 50 meters,” Ndege said.
He added that the device would be safely detonated in a more
secure location.
The explosive is believed to date back to the colonial era,
likely used during British military operations in Kenya, including the Mau Mau
uprising.
Mortar bombs from that period can remain active for decades, posing serious risks if disturbed.
