2025 - Former Nyeri Town MP and ex-advisor to former Deputy President
Rigathi Gachagua, Ngunjiri Wambugu, has sparked fresh political debate after
publicly defending his handshake with President William Ruto during a public
function in Laikipia County on Thursday, October 23rd, 2025.
In a Facebook post, Wambugu questioned the outrage from
Gachagua’s allies, describing their reaction as cult-like and rooted in
“unnecessary bitterness.”
He mocked what he termed as the “Gachagua doctrine,” which
he claimed discourages any form of association with Ruto or his government.
“The Gachagua doctrine says you can’t have friends in Ruto’s
government, attend their functions, or even greet them,” Wambugu wrote.
“Ati hii picha inakasirisha watu wa Gachagua kwa nini?”
“So even Uhuru should have ignored him last week?”
The post comes amid rising tensions in the Mt Kenya region
following Gachagua’s fallout with Ruto, culminating in his impeachment.
The split has fractured the Kenya Kwanza base, with leaders
now divided between loyalty to the President and allegiance to his former
deputy.
Wambugu’s handshake with Ruto reignited online debate, with
some accusing him of betrayal.
However, he dismissed the criticism, urging for civility in
politics.
“We can disagree politically but still remain civil. Shaking someone’s hand is not betrayal; it’s humanity,” he said.
