2025 - People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader, Martha Karua, has expressed
disappointment over being excluded from speaking during the funeral ceremonies
of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Tuesday, October 21st, Karua
criticized the Kenya Kwanza Government for sidelining opposition leaders during
both the State Funeral at Nyayo Stadium and the final burial in Bondo.
“Saying that I wasn’t given ample time is an understatement.”
“I wasn’t given any time at all,” Karua stated.
“It’s good to give him a state burial, but it’s wrong to try
to own him to the exclusion of others.”
Karua, who was Raila’s presidential running mate in the 2022
elections, said the opposition’s presence was largely ignored, despite their
longstanding ties to the ODM leader.
She acknowledged Wiper leader, Kalonzo Musyoka’s effort to
mention her name but insisted formal recognition was necessary.
“Both at Nyayo Stadium and Bondo, there ought to have been
official recognition of the opposition,” she said.
“They took time to recognize MPs, diplomats, and
dignitaries, but tried to erase the presence of the opposition.”
Karua described the Nyayo Stadium event as particularly
dismissive.
“At Nyayo Stadium it was even worse, but we took it in our
stride,” she added.
Her remarks come just days after Raila was laid to rest at
Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, in a private ceremony attended by
family and national leaders.
