Friday, October 3, 2025 - Kenyan-based blogger and podcaster, James Murua, has issued an urgent appeal to the Kenyan Government and the African Union following the reported abduction of his wife, South African author, Zukiswa Wanner, by Israeli forces.
Wanner was aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian
convoy delivering aid to Gaza, when it was intercepted by the Israeli military
on Thursday, October 2nd, at 4:00 a.m.
The flotilla, comprising over 40 boats and more than 450
international activists, was reportedly detained and taken to Israel.
Murua confirmed that Wanner had joined a South African
delegation to deliver food and medicine to the war-torn region.
“In any other situation, I wouldn’t be worried,” Murua
stated, “but the Israelis have shown singular cruelty to anyone who stands in
the way of their mission to eradicate Palestinians.”
He urged Kenyan authorities, where Wanner has lived for 14
years, and the African Union to act swiftly to secure her release.
Murua described Wanner as a lifelong supporter of the
Palestinian cause, shaped by her upbringing in ANC exile communities in Lusaka
and Harare.
In 2024, she returned the Goethe Medal in protest of
Germany’s support for Israel and its silencing of dissenting voices.
“There is an ongoing genocide,” Murua said.
“This is the time for all of us to stand up for Palestine.
Our son Jama needs his mother back home.
The Israel-Palestine conflict escalated in October 2023
following a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, triggering a full-scale war.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, with
widespread shortages and civilian casualties.
