Former CJ DAVID MARAGA slams DPP RENSON INGONGA over terrorism charges against Gen Z protesters - “The Future of Kenya Is on Trial”

Thursday, September 11, 2025 - Former Chief Justice David Maraga has launched a scathing critique of Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga over the controversial terrorism charges filed against 70 young Kenyans involved in anti-Government demonstrations.

Speaking outside Kahawa Law Courts on Thursday, September 11th, Maraga described the charges as a gross misuse of judicial power and a threat to constitutional freedoms.

“I attended court with other advocates for the youth, to defend our Constitution.”

“We stand with these young people because they are not terrorists. They are the conscience of our nation,” Maraga declared.

He condemned the impact of the charges, noting that many of the accused remain in custody, unable to meet bond terms since the Saba Saba protests.

“Their lives have been turned into hell,” he said.

Maraga accused the Ruto administration of weaponizing anti-terror laws to silence dissent, urging the ODPP to drop what he called “sham terrorism charges.”

He emphasized that peaceful assembly is a constitutional right and warned against judicial abuse.

In response, DPP Ingonga defended his office, stating that the charges were based on evidence and aligned with the ODPP’s “Decision to Charge Guidelines.”

He argued that deliberate acts targeting Government installations meet the legal threshold for terrorism.
