Thursday, September 11, 2025 - Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is once again using her platform to shed light on a deeply personal health journey - her ten-year battle with uterine fibroids.
In a heartfelt Instagram post shared on Thursday, September
11th, 2025, the Hollywood star reminded followers that while Fibroid
Awareness Month may be over, the struggle continues for many women.
“Fibroid Awareness Month may be over, but some of us still
have them! After 10+ years, here’s what I wish I knew from day one,” she wrote,
opening up about the emotional and physical toll of the condition.
Nyong’o revealed that when she was first diagnosed, she
blamed herself, unaware that fibroids are often hereditary.
She later learned that several family members had also
experienced them.
Among the ten lessons she shared, she emphasized the
importance of early detection, seeking second opinions, and bringing a trusted
companion to medical appointments.
In a previous post dated July 14th, 2025, Lupita
disclosed that she underwent surgery to remove 30 fibroids shortly after
winning her Academy Award in 2014.
“I asked my doctor if I could do anything to prevent them
from recurring.”
“You can’t. It’s only a matter of time until they grow
again,” she recalled.
Describing fibroids as non-cancerous growths that range from
pea-sized to melon-sized, Nyong’o highlighted their potential to cause heavy
bleeding, anemia, pelvic pain, and pregnancy complications.
Her candid reflections continue to challenge the silence surrounding women’s reproductive health and encourage others to seek support, speak up, and prioritize their well-being.
