U.S President DONALD TRUMP issues new directive affecting Green Card and Visa applications

Tuesday, August 5, 2025 - U.S President Donald Trump has issued a new directive that significantly impacts green card and visa applications for transgender women seeking to compete in women’s sports in the United States.

Under the new policy, announced by the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), athlete-related visa categories such as O-1A, E11, E21, and National Interest Waivers (NIWs) will be restricted to biological women only.

USCIS spokesperson, Matthew Tragesser, stated that the move is intended to close a “loophole” that allegedly allows male athletes to compete against women by changing their gender identity.

“It’s a matter of safety, fairness, respect, and truth,” the notice reads. “Only biological female athletes will receive a visa to participate in women’s sports.”

Though the policy avoids directly using terms like “transgender” or “trans women,” it refers instead to “male athletes competing in women’s sports.”

These changes also apply to national interest waivers, which previously allowed individuals to bypass certain labor certification requirements for a green card if their work benefited the U.S.

The move has drawn mixed reactions, with critics calling it discriminatory, while Trump’s supporters say it protects the integrity of women’s sports.
