Tuesday, August 19, 2025 - President William Ruto has unveiled a new multi-agency team to spearhead Kenya’s anti-corruption war, just a day after issuing a stern warning to lawmakers allegedly involved in bribery and unethical dealings.
In a statement on Tuesday, Ruto announced the formation of
the Multi-Agency Team on War Against Graft (MAT), designed to enhance synergy
and inter-agency cooperation in tackling corruption, economic crimes, and
related offences.
The team will be chaired by the Executive Office of the
President, with the Office of the Attorney General heading its Secretariat.
Other key agencies in the taskforce include the National
Intelligence Service (NIS), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC),
the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and the Directorate
of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Also represented are the Financial Reporting Centre (FRC),
the Asset Recovery Agency (ARA), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Central
Bank of Kenya (CBK), and the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA).
MAT also has the mandate to co-opt representatives from
other relevant agencies when necessary.
According to Ruto, the team will coordinate resource needs,
foster collaboration, and share best practices in the fight against corruption.
It will also craft communication strategies to raise public
awareness on progress made and engage both domestic and international partners
to bolster asset recovery efforts and counter organised crime.
The President said the team will be funded by allocations
from member institutions and other sources, without providing further details.
Ruto’s renewed anti-graft push comes amid mounting criticism
after he claimed to have intelligence on MPs allegedly pocketing millions in
bribes to sway parliamentary decisions.
