- In a dramatic courtroom twist, a man who appealed his 20-year sentence for
taking advantage of a 9-year-old girl ended up with a life sentence instead.
Paul Otieno Ojwang, convicted for the heinous act committed
in October 2022 in the Ombo area of Migori County, had hoped the High Court
would show leniency.
Claiming the original sentence was too harsh, Ojwang sought
a lighter term.
However, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) saw it
differently.
Senior Assistant DPP M. Ikol Esaba strongly opposed the
appeal, calling the initial sentence too lenient given the age and
vulnerability of the victim.
She urged the court to impose a life sentence to match the
gravity of the crime.
The High Court agreed, enhancing Ojwang’s punishment from 20
years to life imprisonment.
