2025 - The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has appealed for
calm and restraint, particularly from the youth and Gen Z, in the wake of the
controversial death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang while in police
custody.
In a statement from the KCCB General Secretariat, the Bishops
urged Kenyans to remain calm, prayerful, and united as the nation demands
justice.
They emphasized the need for lawful, non-violent means to
pursue accountability, warning against being drawn into unrest.
Ojwang, who was arrested in Homa Bay County over alleged
defamation of Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat, was transferred
to Nairobi’s Central Police Station - over 400 kilometers away - under unclear
circumstances.
He was later found unconscious during routine cell checks
and pronounced dead at Mbagathi Hospital at 1:39 a.m. on Sunday.
Public outrage has since grown, with protests erupting
outside City Mortuary after a scheduled autopsy failed to proceed.
The Officer Commanding Station at Central Police has been
interdicted, a move supported by the bishops, who called for “swift,
transparent, and independent investigations.”
While police claim Ojwang fatally injured himself by hitting
a cell wall, rights groups and the Law Society of Kenya continue to demand
accountability, transparency, and the naming of all implicated officers.
