Details of the 64 Kenyans rescued from slavery in Myanmar - They had been promised well-paying office jobs

Monday, March 3, 2025 - The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has confirmed that 64 Kenyans, who were enslaved by Chinese cartels in Myanmar scam compounds, will soon be repatriated after crossing into Thailand.

In a statement dated March 2nd, the Ministry announced that the Kenyans are currently stranded at the Thai-Myanmar border, awaiting clearance to enter Thailand.

Their entry has been delayed since February 12th, 2025, when Thailand temporarily closed the border after receiving the first batch of 260 rescued foreigners, including 24 Kenyans, from the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA).

"The Kenyan Ambassador in Thailand has been in constant communication with the group, updating them on efforts to secure their safe return home," the Ministry stated.

Kenya is negotiating with Thai authorities to reopen the border crossing on humanitarian grounds and allow repatriation.

The 64 Kenyans are among over 7,000 foreigners from 30 nationalities rescued by DKBA and the Border Guard Force (BGF).

Many were lured into Myanmar with promises of well-paying office jobs but were instead forced into cybercrimes such as fraud, identity theft, phishing, romance scams, and cryptocurrency scams, run by Chinese cartels.

The Ministry urged Kenyans to verify job opportunities abroad with the State Department for Diaspora Affairs before traveling. It also advised job seekers to use licensed recruitment agencies, listed on www.neaims.so.ke

Kenya is also in the process of rescuing its citizens from exploitative labor conditions in Libya, South Sudan, Sudan, Lebanon, Israel, and other affected countries.
