Sunday, August 23, 2026 - Kenya Commercial Bank Head of Data Protection, Rosemary Koech Kimwatu, is reported to have taken her own life after silently battling depression.
The mother of four was found dead at her Ngong home on
Friday, August 21, after what former colleagues and industry peers described as
a sustained campaign of harassment by her immediate supervisor.
Rosemary had spent nearly two decades moving between law,
fintech, public policy, and technology, building a reputation as one of Kenya's
most respected voices on data protection and digital rights long before she
ever set foot inside KCB's headquarters.
Her professional journey had taken her from marketing and industrial relations to senior legal and regulatory roles at fintech firms such as WayaWaya and MODE, before she joined Safaricom PLC as Public Policy Manager and, in June 2022, became KCB's Data Protection Officer.
Just one year later, she earned a promotion to Head of Data
Protection, a role that placed her in charge of the Group's data protection
compliance across all its operations.
Yet those who worked alongside her said her rapid rise
inside the bank came at a terrible cost.
Her dedication, her attention to detail, and her unwavering
commitment to doing what was right seemed to have made her a target for
someone who appeared threatened by her competence and determined to break her
spirit.
She had confided in a few trusted peers about her struggles, describing her work environment as increasingly hostile and expressing fear that her professional reputation was being deliberately undermined by a boss who seemed intent on making her life unbearable.
