- Outspoken Nandi Senator, Samson Cherargei, has tabled a motion seeking to
slash or withdraw former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s state‑funded retirement
benefits.
The vocal legislator argues that Kenya’s fourth President
has violated the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act by actively engaging in
partisan politics long after leaving office.
In his motion dated May 4th, 2026, Cherargei
reminded the House that the Act was designed to safeguard the dignity of
retired Presidents, ensuring they remain neutral and available for advisory
roles.
“Section 6 of the Act restricts a retired President from active
engagement in political party activities beyond the prescribed period. It
envisages a consultative, non‑partisan role for the benefit of the nation,”
he stated.
The Senator accused Uhuru of flouting these provisions by
attending political rallies, issuing statements perceived as endorsements, and
participating in mobilisation activities aligned with specific political
formations.
He questioned whether taxpayers should continue funding a
retired leader who, in his view, has crossed the line into active politics.
Cherargei’s motion calls for a comprehensive audit of all
public resources allocated to the former President, to be conducted by the
Office of the Auditor‑General within 60 days.
Should funds be recovered, he recommends they be redirected
towards welfare programs for ordinary Kenyans.
For the motion to succeed, it requires support from at least
two‑thirds of all Members of Parliament.
