2026 - Kisii University is mourning the sudden death of fourth‑year student,
Mercy Chepkemoi Lang’at, whose life was cut short by an electric shock just
months before her graduation.
The English and Literature student died on Sunday, April 26th,
after coming into contact with an exposed wire while hanging clothes at her off‑campus
hostel in the Fanta area of Kisii.
Her passing has sparked grief and outrage among fellow
students, who staged protests demanding accountability and urgent reforms to
safeguard learners.
Many visited her hostel after the incident, sharing videos that revealed unsafe living conditions, including live wires and unsanitary bathrooms.
They accused the landlord of negligence and urged the
university to construct safe hostels to protect students from similar
tragedies.
“Landlords here are too careless. The houses around Kisii
Campus are in bad condition, yet they demand a lot of money.” one student
lamented.
The protests drew in residents, who joined students in calling on Kenya Power and relevant authorities to inspect electrical installations in rental areas.
In a joint statement posted on Facebook, students demanded
swift action: “We cannot continue to lose lives because of exposed wires.”
“We call upon the university management and security
apparatus to move with speed and bring those whose negligence may have led to
this incident to book.”
“To the Kisii University fraternity and Mercy’s family,
please accept our sincere condolences.”
