2026 - The Nairobi County Government is mourning the sudden death of Eng.
Charles Ngugi Gathara, the Deputy Director of Water and Sanitation, who
reportedly collapsed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) moments
before boarding a flight to Ghana for official duties.
According to preliminary reports, Eng. Gathara was at the
departure terminal preparing to board when he suddenly fell ill and collapsed.
Emergency responders are said to have rushed to assist him,
but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Colleagues and county officials have described him as a
hardworking, diligent and highly professional public servant who was deeply
committed to improving water and sanitation services in Nairobi.
The exact cause of his death remains unclear.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations,
including a post-mortem examination, to establish what led to the sudden
collapse.
His death comes at a time of heightened political tension
within the County Government, following recent remarks by Governor Johnson
Sakaja alleging interference by powerful cartels seeking to influence County
operations.
As investigations continue, leaders and staff within Nairobi
County have expressed shock and grief, sending condolences to his family,
friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
