SHOCK as a senior Nairobi County official collapses and dies at JKIA while enroute to Ghana for official duties - Was foul play involved?

Tuesday, March 3, 2026 - The Nairobi County Government is mourning the sudden death of Eng. Charles Ngugi Gathara, the Deputy Director of Water and Sanitation, who reportedly collapsed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) moments before boarding a flight to Ghana for official duties.

According to preliminary reports, Eng. Gathara was at the departure terminal preparing to board when he suddenly fell ill and collapsed.

Emergency responders are said to have rushed to assist him, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Colleagues and county officials have described him as a hardworking, diligent and highly professional public servant who was deeply committed to improving water and sanitation services in Nairobi.

The exact cause of his death remains unclear.

Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations, including a post-mortem examination, to establish what led to the sudden collapse.

His death comes at a time of heightened political tension within the County Government, following recent remarks by Governor Johnson Sakaja alleging interference by powerful cartels seeking to influence County operations.

As investigations continue, leaders and staff within Nairobi County have expressed shock and grief, sending condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

More details are expected as authorities release official findings.
