Friday, March 27, 2026 - Court of Appeal Judge, Justice Katwa Kigen, who previously served as President William Ruto’s lawyer, has been shortlisted for appointment to the Supreme Court.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) announced on Friday,
March 27th, that five candidates had made the cut for interviews to
fill the vacant position at the country’s highest court.
Alongside Kigen, the other shortlisted names include Anne
Waceke, Kiratu Makori, Justices Joseph Sergon, Francis Kipruto Tuiyott and
Abdulahi Mohammed Warsame.
The announcement follows a notice earlier this year in which
the JSC confirmed it had received six applications.
After reviewing the submissions for compliance, the
Commission narrowed the list to five.
Interviews are scheduled for April 28th and 29th,
2026, and will be conducted by the JSC as part of a competitive process.
The vacancy arose following the death of Justice Mohamed
Ibrahim on December 17th last year after a long illness.
In its notice, the JSC emphasized transparency and public
participation, inviting Kenyans to submit written reservations or information
about any of the shortlisted candidates.
“Members of the public are invited to avail in writing any
information of interest… such information shall be kept confidential,” the
Commission stated.
Once interviews are complete, the JSC will forward its
nominee to President Ruto for formal appointment, as required by the
Constitution.
Kigen’s shortlisting comes just two months after he was
sworn in as a Court of Appeal judge on January 27th, 2026.
He is well known for representing Ruto in high‑profile
cases, including his defence at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and
during the 2022 presidential election petition.
His candidacy has already sparked interest, given his close
ties to the Head of State and his recent rise in the Judiciary.
