2026 - President William Ruto surprised Kenyans on Thursday, March 26th,
after disclosing that he holds Mozambican citizenship.
Speaking at State House, Nairobi, during a joint press
conference with Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo, Ruto explained that he was
awarded the honorary citizenship during a past visit to Maputo.
“I agree that the last time I was in Mozambique, I was given
the keys to Maputo by the Mayor.”
“He also signed for me a small certificate to be a citizen
of Mozambique. I will make use of my citizenship and the key when I come back,”
Ruto revealed.
President Chapo, who is in Kenya for a three‑day official
visit, reiterated the gesture, saying:
“I know two years back you were in Maputo and got the key,
and you are also Mozambican.”
“You are a citizen of Maputo.”
The Mozambican leader also announced that Kenyan drivers
with valid licenses will now be allowed to drive freely in Mozambique without
police interference, a move aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.
During the meeting, the two leaders signed three Memoranda
of Understanding (MoUs) covering diplomatic training, research and capacity
building, penitentiary and prison services, and cooperation in youth and
sports.
Ruto added that discussions also touched on trade and
economic cooperation, identifying key growth areas for both nations.
