2026 - People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader, Martha Karua, has defended
her role in former President Mwai Kibaki’s Government during the disputed 2007
general election, after an online user compared her conduct to that of
President William Ruto.
In a post on X on Monday, March 16th, Karua
dismissed the comparison, insisting that while she was a staunch supporter of
Kibaki, she did not engage in electoral malpractice or violence.
“I was a staunch Kibaki supporter but did not aid or abet
rigging or cause violence the way William Ruto did landing him at The Hague,”
she wrote.
Karua clarified that her role at the time was similar to
that of veteran lawyer and Siaya Governor, James Orengo, in Raila Odinga’s
camp.
“I was what Orengo was to Raila Odinga - an agent,”
she added.
Karua has often faced criticism over her involvement in the
hotly contested 2007 presidential election, which Raila Odinga claimed was
rigged.
The disputed outcome triggered widespread post-election
violence, leading to hundreds of deaths and the displacement of thousands.
Eventually, Kibaki, who was declared winner, was compelled
to form a coalition government with Odinga under international mediation.
