2026 - The tragic acid attack on popular SDA choir member, Claire, by her
alleged jilted ex-boyfriend, Elvis Opiyo, has shocked Kenyans and sparked a
national conversation about gender-based violence.
Claire, a vibrant member of the Redemption Ministers choir,
is now fighting for her life at Kenyatta National Hospital after suffering
severe burns from sulphuric acid.
Elvis, a married NIS officer with two children, is accused
of orchestrating the attack after their eight-year relationship ended.
For nearly a decade, Elvis supported Claire - paying her
school fees from Form Four through university, covering her upkeep, and even
assisting her family financially.
But while Claire thrived, his wife and children endured
humiliation and disrespect, with Claire allegedly flaunting herself as his
“second wife.”
Everything changed when Claire graduated last year and told
Elvis she had found someone else and walked away.
The rejection reportedly devastated Elvis, who attempted
suicide two months ago.
Consumed by heartbreak, he allegedly plotted revenge,
believing that if he could not have her, she should suffer.
He allegedly hired an assailant who cornered Claire as she
headed home and splashed the corrosive liquid on her before attempting to flee
on a waiting motorbike.
The attack caused her clothes to melt away and left her
screaming in pain.
Members of the public quickly intervened, cornering one
suspect and beating him before police rescued him and took him to Kibra Police
Station.
Elvis has since been arrested and is in police custody.
Suba North MP, Millie Odhiambo, has strongly condemned the
attack, urging Kenyans to reject violence as a way of resolving conflicts.
“Ukiachwa, accept and move on.”
“Violence is never a solution,” she wrote, warning that heartbreak should never justify assault.
