Tuesday, February 24, 2026 - Chaos erupted in Nairobi’s Central Business District after heavy rains exposed yet another glaring failure in the city’s drainage system.
A shocking video circulating online shows unsuspecting
pedestrians walking along a flooded street before suddenly plunging into an
open sinkhole concealed beneath the water.
Several residents sustained injuries in the incident,
sparking outrage across the capital.
Each rainy season, Nairobi’s non‑existent or poorly
maintained drainage network is overwhelmed, leaving residents vulnerable to
flooding, collapsing ground and dangerous sinkholes.
The viral footage has ignited fury among netizens, many of
whom are demanding accountability from Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Critics argue that despite repeated promises to modernize
the city’s infrastructure, little has been done to prevent such disasters.
The recurring nature of these accidents has turned what
should be routine rainfall into a public safety crisis.
