Government releases updated list of public and private universities approved to operate in Kenya - Don’t waste your time and money!

Tuesday, January 20, 2026 - The Commission for University Education (CUE) has released an updated list of institutions legally authorized to operate in Kenya.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, January 20th, 2026, CUE confirmed that 35 public universities and 31 private universities are approved to provide higher education.

The commission also recognized 16 specialized degree‑awarding institutions alongside several constituent colleges operating under letters of interim authority.

Among the approved public universities are the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Kenyatta University, Egerton University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Maseno University, Masinde Muliro University, Dedan Kimathi University, Technical University of Kenya, Technical University of Mombasa, Pwani University, Kisii University, University of Eldoret, Maasai Mara University, and many others spread across the country.

Private universities cleared by CUE include the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Daystar University, United States International University (USIU), Africa Nazarene University, Strathmore University, Kabarak University, Mount Kenya University, Riara University, Zetech University, and Aga Khan University, among others. Specialized institutions such as the National Defence University of Kenya, the Open University of Kenya, and the National Intelligence Research University have also been approved.

At the same time, CUE issued a stern warning against 16 institutions not authorized to offer university education.

These include Eldoret Bible College, Grace Life Bible College, Africa Theological Seminary, The Africa Talent University, Breakthrough Bible College, Logos University, Bradegate International University, and Dominion Mission Theological University.

“For the avoidance of doubt, any institution operating as a university or degree‑awarding body and which does not appear on the Commission’s list is illegal, and their qualifications will not be recognized in Kenya,” CUE stated.

The commission urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious institutions, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Kenya’s higher education system.
