2026 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed social media
reports claiming that Cleophas Malala has defected from the Democracy For The
Citizens Party (DCP).
Speaking over the weekend, Gachagua clarified that Malala
has been unwell since hosting the Malala Super Cup in December and had
requested time off to recover.
Gachagua accused allies of President William Ruto of
spreading false rumors about Malala’s political allegiance.
“Cleophas Malala is a bold leader and a man of principle.”
“After the Super Cup in Kakamega, he fell seriously ill and
asked me for permission to rest before resuming party affairs.”
“But these Ruto’s people are stuck; their work now is just
spreading rumors,” he said.
The former Deputy President also rejected claims that his
allies are defecting from DCP to join Ruto’s camp, insisting that those leaving
were “moles” returning to their original side.
He emphasized that the party remains intact and united.
“If there were Ruto’s spies within my party, we already knew
it was only a matter of time before they revealed themselves.”
“DCP is intact, no one is leaving,” Gachagua stated.
He further announced plans to purge his camp of politicians
he believes are acting as spies for Ruto.
“This is the year I want all those people who were sent by
Ruto out. I have started removing them one by one,” he added.
Malala’s last public appearance was on December 31st,
2025, during the finals of the Malala Super Cup in Kakamega.
His absence was noted as Gachagua hosted a three‑day retreat
with allies at the Coast over the weekend.
Malala joined Gachagua’s camp in 2024 after being ousted as
UDA Secretary General and was appointed Interim Deputy Party Leader of DCP in
May 2025.
