2025 - Public anger is mounting following the mysterious death of 23-year-old boda boda rider Jack
Deon Maloba, who died just hours after being arrested and
detained at Kawangware
Police Post in Nairobi.
Maloba was arrested on Thursday, December 11th,
2025, at around 7:00 p.m. and booked into the police cells.
Barely four
hours later, he was pronounced dead.
His body was transferred to City Mortuary, where it was officially
booked in at 10:50 p.m.
Police claim that Maloba was alone in the cell and allegedly hanged himself using a T-shirt.
However, his family has strongly disputed this account,
saying the alleged T-shirt
has not been produced as evidence.
They further allege that Maloba’s body still had all the clothes he was wearing at the
time of arrest, casting doubt on the police version of events.
The family also claims that marks on his neck appear consistent with the possible use
of a wire, not a T-shirt.
Maloba leaves behind a two-year-old daughter, as human rights groups and his family call for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding yet another controversial death in police custody.
