Wednesday, December 10, 2025 - Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has issued a clarification on his administration’s stance regarding the proposed renaming of the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in honour of President William Ruto.
In a statement, Sang explained that the stadium, originally located on an eight-acre parcel within the Kapsabet Showground, is being relocated to a larger site outside the town.
He said the move was necessary to facilitate its upgrade into a modern facility capable of hosting diverse sporting activities.
The County boss stressed that the new stadium will continue to honour the legendary athlete Kipchoge Keino while also acknowledging President Ruto’s contribution to sports development.
“The new Kipchoge Keino Stadium will celebrate Keino’s extraordinary achievements and reinforce our identity as the cradle of world-class athletes.”
“It will also cement the President’s legacy as a leader committed to advancing sports,” Sang stated.
Sang further noted that the renaming proposal was partly aimed at distinguishing the Kapsabet facility from another Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.
“Because we have another Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, we will rename the one in Kapsabet to William Ruto Stadium.”
“There is no harm in naming our facility after President Ruto,” he said, citing similar precedents such as Moi Stadium and Raila Odinga Stadium.
He assured stakeholders that the historical significance of both venues will be safeguarded.
The clarification followed remarks made during the inauguration of Kapsabet Municipality offices, where Sang suggested the renaming.
