Friday, October 24, 2025 - A 35-year-old Nairobi woman, Caroline Omondi, is facing charges of electronic fraud after allegedly using fake M-Pesa messages to claim rent payments totaling Sh92,000.
The incident unfolded at Nyama Villa Estate in Embakasi
Central, where Omondi reportedly sent forged transaction texts to her
caretaker, Justus Kenyanya, suggesting that she had paid Sh15,000 monthly over
six months.
In reality, no payments had been made, leaving the landlord short
of Sh92,000.
The caretaker became suspicious in August after spotting
inconsistencies in the messages and requested a full M-Pesa statement, which
confirmed the alleged deception.
Although Omondi made a genuine payment after being warned,
she allegedly resumed the fraud in September.
She was charged under Section 38(2) of the Computer Misuse
and Cybercrimes Act of 2018 and appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate
Stephanie Bett at Makadara Law Courts, pleading not guilty.
She was released on a Sh50,000 cash bail or a Sh100,000
bond.
Prosecutors claim Omondi had been receiving money from her
husband for rent and upkeep but failed to forward the rent.
The case will be mentioned again on November 25, 2025.
