10, 2025 - The shocking assassination of Prof. Kyalo Mbobu in Nairobi on
September 9th, 2025, has left Kenya’s legal and academic communities
in mourning.
But who was this towering figure whose life was cut short in
a drive-by shooting that has stunned the nation?
Kyalo Mbobu wasn’t just a lawyer - he was a force.
For over three decades, he shaped Kenya’s legal landscape as
an Advocate of the High Court, a revered lecturer, and a governance leader.
His courtroom brilliance and academic rigor earned him
respect across the bench and bar.
His lectures at the University of Nairobi and Kenya School
of Law were legendary, blending Socratic dialogue with a fierce insistence that
law must serve justice.
Mbobu chaired the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT),
where he steered high-stakes election disputes with fairness and integrity.
His leadership during the 2017 elections helped cement the
tribunal’s role as a cornerstone of Kenya’s democratic process.
He also authored The Law and Practice of Evidence in Kenya,
a 411-page masterwork that demystified complex legal principles and became a
staple in law schools and courtrooms nationwide.
Beyond the courtroom and classroom, Mbobu mentored
generations of lawyers - many now serving in top judicial and public roles.
Among them is renowned lawyer, Nelson Havi, who took to X
(formerly twitter) to mourn his former teacher.
Despite his accolades, he remained grounded, advocating for judicial reform and access to justice. His legacy as a principled advocate, passionate educator, and visionary leader will endure long after his untimely death.
